How you can support your child:
- Ensure that your child is reading to an adult on a regular basis - little and often is the best approach. It is important that your child reads aloud in order for the adult to check fluency and understanding and also so they are able to correct any words that are mispronounced.
- Practise times tables regularly - by the end of Year 4, all pupils must know the times tables up to 12 x 12.
- Provide writing opportunities - short writing tasks such as diary entries, a letter to a member of the family, a postcard, a cartoon strip with captions etc. will really help your child develop spoken word into a written format and build their stamina for writing longer texts in school.
- Correct their spoken language/pronunciation - children at this age will write exactly how they say a word aloud. Therefore if a child pronounces a word incorrectly then their spelling will be affected, equally if a child speaks grammatically incorrect then they will write in that way too. Demonstrate and correct the spoken language accurately and not only will your child's speaking skills improve but their writing will too.
