Our reading skill characters

Reading is the top priority at Birchfield Primary School. Reading allows children to acquire an array of new knowledge; to develop new skills from across the wider curriculum and to bring different subjects to life through non-fiction.

Our Curriculum is full of rich, challenging, high quality texts and picture books for the children to enjoy. Reading fiction texts allows children to ‘get lost in a book’ and immerse themselves into the wonderful world of their imagination. We aspire to ensure that all children leave our school both with a love of reading and reading to the very best of their ability, ready for the challenge of the next stage in their education.

Reading at School

Reading is an integral part of what we do in school on a day to day basis and all staff have high expectations of what our pupils can achieve. Being engrossed in reading allows pupils to practise their skills and vocabulary which in turn leads them to become successful 'all round' learners.

Reading at Home

We believe that it is not just teachers who help children to read, it is the whole school community. For families it is an expectation that learning is a shared responsibility between home and school, therefore all our families are asked to read at home with their child weekly.
