Physical Education at Birchfield Primary School

P.E vision

At Birchfield Primary School, we recognise that throughout the Primary years Physical Education and activity play a vital part in the development of a balanced and complete child. A structured PE curriculum provides children with experiences and opportunities that will contribute to and support his/her physical and mental well-being, and promote within the child values such as fair play and respect.

At Birchfield, children are encouraged to be physically active as often as possible, and through quality PE lessons, teaching and extra curricular experiences we can promote healthy habits that will contribute to an increase in physical confidence and a healthy lifestyle now and in future years. We hope to provide a programme that caters for individual needs, ensures success and enjoyment and develops skill and a healthy attitude to physical activity.

Get Set for P.E

Ay Birchfield Primary we use the Get Set 4 PE Curriculum which builds over time. Each lesson plan has progressive activities that are designed to inspire and engage pupils, allowing them to explore and develop skills before applying them. The lessons have key success criteria which provides clear information to help the pupils develop their skill level and teaching points appear throughout to help teachers with their subject knowledge and differentiation tasks provide activities with simple changes to appropriately challenge all of your pupils.

Curriculum Design

Activities cover the breadth of the curriculum and include gymnastics, dance and yoga, as well as more traditional games such as tag rugby, cricket and tennis.

Morley Schools Tag Rugby Festival

Morley Rugby Club has been established since 1878 and is still a thriving local club for all ages and members of the community.

The club have been running free taster sessions for all boys and girls age 5-9  on a Wednesday evening (6-7pm).  We are delighted to be working with one of their specialist coaches in school to give a free trial of tag (non contact) rugby for all children.  Should anyone then wish to play at the club they have a full schedule of games commencing.

Just like Birchfield, they are passionate (after the traumatic Covid-19 period) to re build the socialisation and fitness of local boys and girls in the Morley area.

On Wednesday 13th October, pupils from Year 1 and 2, were selected to take part in the “Inter Schools Challenge Tag Cup” at the club.  Eight local schools took part. The children had such a wonderful time and were thrilled to be playing against other children from different schools.
