First Chapter Friday

Each week, First Chapter Friday brings a spark of discovery to our classroom. Every Friday, we dive into the opening chapter of a new book, rotating through genres so our pupils experience everything from fantasy to historical fiction to mystery. As we read, children explore the characters and their relationships, summarise key moments, make predictions, and reflect on their own thoughts and feelings. It’s a simple ritual that builds curiosity, broadens literary horizons, and helps our children to grow as thoughtful, enthusiastic readers.

Homework

Homework will be set on a Monday (in line with the homework policy) and will be expected to be completed by the following Monday. This will be tracked on a Monday morning when reading records are signed.

Maths homework will be accessed through our Learning By Questions platform. This will link to our maths learning from the previous week or prior learning. Children will have a QR code in their planner to log in – please see the parent guide attached.

Spellings will be set via Spelling Shed. Children are excpected to to access this at home during the week. This forms part of their homework. All spellings are listed in the reading record for your reference.

Times Tables Rock Stars is a fun and motivating way for children to build confidence and fluency with their multiplication facts. Through quick-fire games, personalised practice, and engaging challenges, every child can work at their own level while still feeling part of a whole‑class effort. The programme adapts to each learner, helping them strengthen recall, improve accuracy, and develop speed in a way that feels more like play than practice.

Accelerated Reader is a whole‑school reading programme that matches children with books that are both age‑appropriate and suitably challenging. It supports pupils in choosing texts that build confidence, develop comprehension, and encourage steady progress in their reading.

Renaissance also offers a helpful feature called Home Connect, which families can access from home. Home Connect allows parents and carers to view their child’s reading progress and celebrate their achievements. You can also choose to receive email notifications each time your child completes an Accelerated Reader quiz or a STAR Reader test in school, keeping you connected to their reading journey.
