Design Technology at Birchfield Primary School

Intent

The design and technology curriculum at Birchfield Primary is delivered not only in the classroom but also through visits and workshops.  It is designed to enable pupils to build and apply knowledge and skills across a range of different applications including construction, textiles, mechanics, electronics and food.

The design and technology curriculum is designed to deliver the National Curriculum aims and beyond and knowledge is structured so that each term and year build upon one another. This enables pupils to not only gain coherent knowledge of techniques, skills and designers, but to also understand the design process. The curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils grow to be empathetic, honest and respectful learners who take responsibility for the world that they live in. The study of a rich variety of materials and components alongside progressively more complex technical knowledge and skills underpin the curriculum design to ensure that pupils gain an understanding of the wider world and the influence that designers have had on shaping the world that we live in today. Through developing the skills of designing, making and evaluating, we aim for our learners to leave us as competent, creative designers who are able to solve problems within a variety of contexts. The depth of knowledge gained will give pupils the foundations to be fully prepared for study at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
